Fiserv’s own Naming Standards document creates a legitimate path for a conceptual name. The standards state: “where we have a range of solutions that have a common need, we use slightly more conceptual names” — citing Carat, Optis, Architect, and Premier as precedents.

FDIC Part 328 (updated 2024) restricts non-bank entities from implying insured status. Because Fiserv is a technology provider, the product name cannot imply Fiserv is the insured institution. But aspirational naming is explicitly permitted — the FDIC regulates misleading insurance claims, not brand tone. The “[Name], made possible by Fiserv” construction actually helps compliance by clarifying the technology provider relationship.

The trademark sweet spot: a real word used metaphorically in a context far from its literal meaning. Carat for commerce. DNA for banking. Clover for point-of-sale. These are ownable because the metaphorical use creates distinctiveness that generic financial terms cannot.

The constraint is also the opportunity. “Fiserv” carries all the institutional credibility the product name needs. The master brand provides the financial services context, regulatory trust, and enterprise weight. This frees the product name to carry the aspirational positioning — the community impact, the multiplier effect, the proprietary metaphor.

This is exactly how Cambr worked at StoneCastle. The company name said “banking.” The product name said “speed.”

The MicroCo naming engagement discovered that no microseries app used emotional naming. The entire category was trapped in functional descriptions. The discovery opened a naming territory that competitors had systematically ignored.

The same structural gap exists in financial services deposit products. Every competitor has chosen a side: either institutional precision (ICS, CDARS, Deposit Placement Service) or aspirational warmth (Prosperity, Thrive, Flourish). Nobody occupies the middle.

The middle is where names live that carry both institutional credibility and specific, grounded meaning. Names drawn from infrastructure, geography, natural systems, and hidden mechanisms. Names that work in a board presentation and in a community impact report. Names that a CFO can defend and a community bank can celebrate.
